At Eurobike Bell just presented their new helmet with a detachable chin guard, the Super Air R…
Designed for trailriding and for those looking for extra protection thanks to the chin guard, it has a weight of 679 grams in size medium and cost $275 USD. The technology is the new MIPS Spherical, consisting of two separate EPS (expanded polystyrene) caps that can rotate independently in case of impact with the ground, thus potentially reducing brain damage from rotational impacts.
From the photo above you can clearly see the two sections: the green one, outside, and the black one, which moves with little hand pressure.
The chin release mechanism is the classic one from Bell, with two hooks that go into the two lower ventilation holes. If one does not want the chin guard, the helmet can also be purchased separately. The measured weight, in this case, is 424 grams, and the price drops to $225 USD.
There are only two pads on the chin guard, to keep the weight down and ensure ventilation. It is therefore necessary to use the dial located on the back of the neck to fix the helmet, in addition to the underlying strap with classic closure.
The Super Air R is not DH certified, and has only the classic CE EN1078. It is not meant for competitions, not even enduro ones.
Three sizes available, S, M and L.
