[First Look] Evil Insurgent

[ad3]We recently finished piecing together our highly anticipated Evil Bikes Insurgent. Featuring perhaps the most aggressive geometry in the long travel trail/enduro category and some striking features, it definitely demands and deserves attention. Why were we in such a hurry to throw a leg over this bike? Many reasons, but perhaps the geometry is the biggest factor. Numbers like 16.93″ chainstays, a 25.2″ top tube, a 13.2″ BB height and a sub 65º head angle are daunting for the average rider but warmly welcomed by the aggressive crowd. Evil holds nothing back and makes their intentions crystal clear with this bike. Anyhow, enough drivel, let’s get to the bike porn.

We had to ride it before we shot photos of it, but we couldn’t wait for it to dry.

Geometry

Internal routing here and there. Top left is where the dropper post enters, bottom left is where the shifter cable enters the rear end…The brake and shifter cables are neatly tucked under the top tube.
Non-Drive view. The rear end on this bike is BURLY. The 3 forward most bolts on the rear end are where you can remove the flip chips to adjust the geo from aggressive to savage.
Low and Extra Low. Owner Kevin Walsh probably got sick of explaining that the “high” setting isn’t high at all. Problem solved.
Downtube guard, Integrated, adjustable carbon fiber chainguide, and new on this model is a solid rear axle.
Dreamy view. If you look closely, you’ll notice there are no bottle cage mounts. So far, this is our only gripe with the bike. There may be some sort of logical explanation so stay tuned and we’ll discuss it in our full review.
Cockpit : Renthal Apex stem in 50mm length. 20mm rise Renthal Fatbar Carbon at full 780mm width. Guide Ultimates are the best brakes we’ve ridden to date so we’re happy to have them on this bike. Sensus Swayze Grips.
Roval Traverse Fatty SL wheels. One of the best wheelsets we’ve used to date. DT internals on the rear hub…Stiff, wide hookless rims for excellent traction and a freakishly low weight. We slapped our Bontrager SE5 tires on these and we’re loving it.
160mm Travel RockShox Pike RCT3 Solo Air up front. 42mm offset. We’re waiting on a Lyrik which should match the Insurgents aggressive nature a bit better, but for now, we’re loving the Pike.
We’re sitting on some new bits. The 9point8 Fall Line dropper post is a bit of a game changer. 150mm travel, internally routed. Look for a full review soon. Fizik’s Monte enduro saddle has been making us smile so far.
SRAMs new game changing GX drivetrain. Insanely well priced with all of the performance benefits of their flagship 1X systems at a small weight penalty. Speaking of 1X – the Insurgent is not compatible with front derailleurs…that’s fine with us.
Last but not least – Delta System – the heart of it all. One of, if not the only suspension system that allows you to adjust your geometry without affecting your suspension. A RockShox Monarch Plus Debonair compliments the Insurgents progressive rate wonderfully.
