RockShox Flight Attendant – Wireless Electronic Suspension

After our spyshots taken during the EWS in Finale Ligure , today Rock Shox officially releases Flight Attendant, their wireless electronic suspension system. We haven’t gotten a chance to test it, but our European editors got to see it during Sea Otter Europe, where we took some of the photos you’ll see in this article. This article therefore refers to the press release pending the field test. The answer to the most important question: no, there are no XC forks or shock absorbers compatible with the Flight Attendant. Despite being a performance enhancing system, Rock Shox is currently focused on the trail and enduro segments.

For now it is available on 6 series bikes from 4 brands, which you can see below. As for Canyon, both the Spectral and the Neuron with SRAM AXS and Rock Shox Flight Attendant cost € 7,999.

If you notice any similarities with the Fox Live Valve, we invite you to re-read our field test. At the end of the press release you will find a long series of frequently asked questions that will most likely clarify all your questions and doubts.

[Press release] – The only automatic suspension system that listens to the rider and responds in real-time. Flight Attendant uses a suite of sensors to read rider and terrain inputs to anticipate the perfect suspension position—enabling you to ride faster, ride longer, and spend less energy adjusting your suspension and more time focusing on what matters most: the unbridled joy of riding.

The unmatched interface you’ve come to expect. Crystal clear communication between components. Beautiful cable-free design, meticulously crafted to disappear.

A suite of sensors onboard your fork, rear shock and crankset work in unison to detect every bump, pitch, and pedal stroke made. Flight Attendant is the only automatic suspension system that listens to the rider and paints a picture of the complete riding experience in real time.

Developed over thousands of trail miles around the world, Flight Attendant’s on board algorithm is scientifically engineered to do the complex thinking for you. It analyzes the constant flow of ever-changing data to anticipate the perfect suspension setting for the rider and what the trail demands.

In Auto Mode, Flight Attendant deciphers every input and sends its commands to the AXS-enabled fork and rear shock to instantly react. It does the critical thinking for you. Your suspension is always in the right position at exactly the right time, automatically shifting between Open, Pedal and Lock compression positions before the thought ever crosses your mind.

Life isn’t black and white, or as easy as on or off. Balance is often found somewhere in-between. A 3-position system provides more choice and efficiency gains in more situations for the rider. With Open, Pedal and Lock compressions positions, the Flight Attendant algorithm finds the best connection to the trail, providing the right level of support and comfort at the same time.

OPEN

The moment you point your bike downhill or your tires hit a big impact, Open position allows your suspension to utilize the full amount of available travel while feeling plush and ready to absorb the next big hit.

PEDAL

The sweet spot for efficiency. Pedal position stiffens your suspension just the right amount to maintain traction, reduce excessive suspension movement and deliver the most output from energy well spent.

LOCK

Power to the pedals. In Lock position, the suspension is at its firmest setting to maximize your effort as you put the power down on those long grinds.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT IN MANUAL MODE

On those rare occasions when you need to opt out of Flight Attendant’s Auto Mode, the control’s there if you need it. Disable Auto Mode and cycle between suspension positions on demand. Manual Mode can be accessed through either the Flight Attendant Control Module, or on-the-fly with a click of the assigned paddle on the RockShox AXS Left hand 2-Button Controller.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT IN OVERRIDE MODE

A shortcut to your desired suspension position. Press and hold the assigned paddle on your AXS controller, Override Mode turns off Auto Mode and shifts the system into your designated Override position: Open, Pedal or Lock. After that all-out sprint, or when ready, click the same paddle again to re-engage Auto Mode, and never miss a beat.

GET HOME SAFE

Built in peace of mind. If a system problem arises, like a critically low battery, Safe Mode automatically places the suspension system into the Open position so you can get home safe to recharge.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT BIAS ADJUST

Bias Adjust give you the power to fine tune how Flight Attendant reacts in Auto Mode to your personal ride style and preference. From the factory, the system is set right in the middle: Zero Bias, for an effective balance of all three suspension positions. Based on personal ride style, adjusting Bias instructs the Flight Attendant system to favor the Open or Lock suspension positions.

When you Bias the system towards Lock (+1 or +2) Flight Attendant maximizes rider efficiency and the return on every pedal stroke with the system favoring the firmer positions, Lock or Pedal, as often as possible. When you Bias the system towards Open (-1 or -2) the system will take a softer approach and favor the Open position more often for a plusher overall ride. There’s no right or wrong, Bias Adjust is all about choice and fine tuning the feel of the system to better match your style. Adjust your Bias at any time through the Flight Attendant Control Module or a simple tap on the AXS mobile app.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT LOW SPEED COMPRESSION ADJUST

Dial in your ideal performance and feel on the fork and shock with 10 Low Speed Compression settings. Tunable at any point through the Flight Attendant Control Module or via the SRAM AXS App.

THE APP AT THE CENTER OF IT ALL

AXS-enabled and completely customizable. Flight Attendant is an integrated part of the AXS ecosystem. Use the SRAM AXS App to adjust settings for your entire AXS system, Flight Attendant included. Build a bike profile, customize your controls, check battery charge status, and update firmware as needed right from your phone.

GET RIGHT TO THE RIDE: INITIAL SET UP

Out of the box or fresh from your favorite retailer, set up is simple. Pair your AXS components, set up your front and rear suspension, calibrate the Flight Attendant system, and you’re done! Flight Attendant remembers everything. Next time, get right to the ride.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT CONTROL MODULE

This is the central hub. Flight Attendant’s Control Module lives aboard your fork, collecting data from sensors, analyzing trail and rider inputs, and orchestrating your Flight Attendant components. Located within reach, the Control Module makes it easy to adjust and fine-tune on the fly.

Other news

ButterCups

Low amplitude, vibration reducing material pucks… but we like to call them ButterCups. ButterCups block 20% of unwanted “trail chatter” before it reaches your hands. The gold housings on the end of the damper and air spring hold two rubber pucks that absorb the high frequency vibrations before they travel through the fork and into the handlebar. ButterCups reduce overall hand and arm fatigue and will leave you feeling fresh with more control over the trail.

Charger Flight Attendant

Charger Flight Attendant electronic damper features an automatic 3-position compression adjustment (Open/Pedal/Lock) with 10 clicks of independent adjustable Low Speed Compression and 20 clicks of adjustable rebound.

Debonair +

DebonAir+ is built to strike the perfect balance of what riders really want: butter-like small bump feel, increased support throughout the travel, and higher overall ride height for more confidence when things get steep.

Pressure relief valves

Pressure Relief Valves eliminate unwanted air pressure build up in the lower leg caused by variations in altitude or temperature. With the press of a button or two, Pressure Relief Valves restore the lower leg balance for optimum sensitivity and a premium fork feel.

Stiffness reducers

Using torque caps add an additional 5% torsional stiffness to our forks. But if you aren’t interested in “free stiffness” all Flight Attendant forks will now feature the option to run a standard hubcap via a new bolt-in adapter. FAQ

What information is Flight Attendant using to make decisions?
Flight Attendant analyses data from sensors in the fork, rear shock, and crank to adjust each component into the three suspension positions (Open, Pedal, and Lock) to suit the terrain and rider needs.

How fast do the sensors open the damping? And how long does it take to lock the damper out?
With the combination of sensors and the Flight Attendant algorithm, we feel there is much more to Flight Attendant than speed alone. However, if we are looking at raw data, the system analyses terrain and rider inputs and makes suspension-position decisions every 5 milliseconds. For a frame of reference, the average time for a blink is between 300 and 400 milliseconds; so, in the time it takes to blink, Flight Attendant has made about 80 suspension state decisions based on input from the rider and terrain.

Does Flight Attendant learn from my riding style and adjust its behaviour?
Flight Attendant does not learn from the given rider’s style, rather, it is an algorithm developed over hundreds of thousands of trail miles around the world. This algorithm is continually evolving and updated with new firmware. Flight Attendant makes adjustments by continually analysing data input and terrain changes. The bias for how quickly or sensitively these changes are made can be adjusted within the system.

How does the algorithm prioritize the different inputs to control damping for the best riding experience?
Flight Attendant’s algorithm is highly sophisticated and born from thousands of hours of rider input and data analysis. The system utilizes data from all sensors to paint a picture of the terrain and adjusts the damping according to the input received. Flight Attendant’s highest priority is adjusting the system to the open position when bumps or disturbances are detected and will adjust the system to be more efficient when it senses the rider pedalling.

What’s the difference between Flight Attendant and other electronically-controlled suspension?

– Flight Attendant is predictive; it adjusts damping based on input from the rider and the terrain.

– Wireless integration of Flight Attendant components means a cleaner, quieter bike and ride experience.

– Flight Attendant offers three compression positions: Open, Pedal, and Lock.

– Firmware updates over the course of time will allow your Flight Attendant system to learn, receive new features, and become more valuable over time.

– Being a part of the AXS Ecosystem means you can control, personalize, and monitor all your AXS components together.

– You can say “Prepare for take-off” when Flight Attendant is a part of your crew.

How significant is the pedal sensor in terms of data input?
The pedal sensor gathers data from the rider and is the key component to the human part of the system. The pedal sensor is why Flight Attendant is predictive rather than reactive, and is an essential part of the system, ensuring the most efficient ride.

Will Flight Attendant make my bike more efficient?
Flight Attendant’s “Auto Mode” is designed to maximize rider efficiency. In Auto Mode, Flight Attendant adapts as you go, adjusting the fork and rear shock between Open, Pedal, and Lock compression. By putting your suspension in the right position at exactly the right time, Auto Mode gives you the most return on every pedal stroke, weight shift, and micro adjustment all while you ride.

Can Flight Attendant components analyse my ride data to help me become a better rider?
Flight Attendant uses data input to manage the damping positions between Open, Pedal, and Lock. It does not provide data to deliver recommendations on initial setup or a rider’s performance.

Does the lockout force vary across the fork offerings (Pike to ZEB)?
All Flight Attendant fork models (Pike Ultimate, Lyrik Ultimate, and ZEB Ultimate) have the same lockout force; they are tuned to have a firmer lockout than Charger 2.1 RCT3, but a softer lockout than our XC forks.

Is the compression damping adjustment range the same as Charger 2.1 RC2?
How does it differ?
The Flight Attendant fork damper is similar to RCT3 in that it offers three suspension positions: Open, Pedal, and Lock. The damping adjustment range across rebound and low-speed compression is similar to that of our RC2 damper. This damper features 20 clicks of independent rebound adjust and 10 clicks of Low Speed Compression for both the fork and rear shock.

Does Flight Attendant optimize rebound damping on trail?
Flight Attendant does not make any adjustments to the rebound damping; however,
rebound can be manually adjusted on the bottom of the lower leg. From Turtle to Jackalope, RockShox’s wide rebound adjustment range has a consistent feel, click-by-click, to make sure you can dial in your suspension.

Are Flight Attendant parts waterproof?
All AXS components are completely water and dust proof to the IPX7 international standard. Initially developed for construction vehicles and food sanitization, the IPX7 standard validates systems that require regular pressurized cleaning. For a mountain biker, it means no hesitation to head out when the weather looks less than ideal.

Can I connect my Flight Attendant parts with the other AXS parts on my bike?
Flight Attendant is an integrated part of the SRAM AXS Ecosystem, therefore all parts can be connected and managed as one bike profile within the SRAM AXS mobile app. The controller options are adjustable and can be customized for each rider.

How do the Flight Attendant parts communicate to one another?
Each component is a part of the SRAM AXS Ecosystem, which can connect to one another using our proprietary encryption wireless network.

How does Flight Attendant interact with the SRAM AXS mobile app?
Flight Attendant is an integrated part of the AXS Ecosystem. Use the SRAM AXS mobile app to adjust settings for the entire AXS system, Flight Attendant included. Control, personalize, and monitor components with the SRAM AXS mobile app, where you can also check battery charge status, and perform any firmware updates right from your phone.

The pedal sensor insert seems to only fit certain DUB cranks?
The pedal sensor is designed to work with our XX1 and X01 DUB spindles, but is compatible with most DUB spindles except the DUB 83 (DH) spindles.

Can I test function of an individual component without pairing the entire system?
The system needs to be paired for full functionality, but the fork and rear shock will function without pairing.

Does changing sag affect calibration?
Large changes in sag will require the calibration to be reset, but not necessarily immediately (i.e., if you’re out on the trail). Make sure to complete calibration on a level surface.

How does Bias Adjustment compare/relate to Low Speed Compression (LSC)?
Does Bias change LSC?
Low Speed Compression (LSC) settings function independently of Flight Attendant Modes. This means that the LSC settings will be maintained while in the Open position even if
the rider switches between the Auto, Manual, and Override Modes. Bias Adjust affects the system as a whole and how often it switches between Open, Pedal, and Lock positions when in Auto Mode.

Does changing Bias affect system calibration?
Changing bias settings will not affect the previously-set system calibration.

Why am I unable to adjust my settings in the SRAM AXS mobile app?
If the Open, Pedal, or Lock LED is orange, the system is in Override Mode – a shortcut to your desired suspension position. Settings are not adjustable from Override Mode.

If the Open, Pedal, and Lock LEDs are all yellow, the system is in Safe Mode, and settings are not adjustable. Check out the Flight Attendant User Manual for Safe Mode Troubleshooting.

What does each LED indicate on my Flight Attendant components? Control Module LEDs:
Green LEDs indicate you are in AUTO Mode.
Orange LEDs indicate you are in Override Mode.

Red LEDs indicate you are in Manual Mode.
Yellow LEDs indicate you are in Safe Mode.
Magenta LEDs indicate you are in the Bias Adjustment setting.
Blue LEDs indicate you are adjusting the Low Speed Compression Setting for the front fork. Cyan LEDs indicate you are adjusting the Low Speed Compression Setting for the rear shock. White LEDs indiciate you are in calibration mode.

Can I manually adjust or tune Flight Attendant compression and rebound settings? Rebound is manually adjusted using the rebound adjuster knob found on the rear shock and on the bottom of the fork’s lower leg. This can be adjusted any time by the ride.

Low Speed Compression can be manually adjusted for the rear shock and fork using the Control Module or SRAM AXS mobile app.

Your Flight Attendant system automatically controls your suspensions 3 position threshold compression, shifting between Open, Pedal, and Lock positions while in Auto Mode. The rider can manually shift between these positions while in Manual mode.

Can I tune the air spring in the Flight Attendant fork or rear shock?
Yes! For token installation and removal, check out the service manual for your fork or rear shock on https://www.sram.com/en/service.

Is Flight Attendant compatible with Eagle AXS and Reverb AXS controllers?
Yes! Functionality of all AXS components can be customized in the SRAM AXS mobile app.

Can I use Flight Attendant without a handlebar mounted controller?
Yes! In Auto Mode, no additional controller is needed. While in Manual Mode, you can either use the Control Module “+” or “–“ buttons, or the new left hand, 2-position AXS controller to cycle through suspension positions.

Can Flight Attendant be used on an e-bike?
Yes, Flight Attendant will be available on select e-bikes in the near future.

By using Flight Attendant on an e-bike, can I better conserve battery power (meaning longer rides)?
Flight Attendant increases the efficiency of both the rider and the entire system, so there’s no energy wasted. A more composed and efficient rider can pedal through tricky sections of trail with more control and stability, leading to a more controlled cadence. Therefore, e-bikes using Flight Attendant will be slightly more efficient when it comes to battery usage.

Can I use Flight Attendant with a non-SRAM drivetrain equipped mountain bike? Flight Attendant components can be used with another drivetrain system. However, Flight Attendant will be available only on complete bikes rather than aftermarket upgrade components. These complete bikes will have the full AXS Ecosystem.

BATTERIES AND POWER

How long can I expect the batteries to last on the fork and rear shock?
There are several variables that will affect the length of time the batteries will hold a charge for a given rider; however, we expect the batteries to last an average of 20-30 hours before requiring a charge.
What type of batteries do the Flight Attendant components use and what is the expected lifespan?

– Fork: rechargeable SRAM AXS battery, 20-30 hours
– Rear shock: rechargeable SRAM AXS battery, 30-40 hours – Pedal sensor: AAA lithium, 200 hours
– Controller: CR2032, 200 hours

Can I use alkaline AAA batteries in the pedal sensor?
No, the use of alkaline batteries in the pedal sensor is NOT approved. Alkaline AAA batteries have a significantly decreased battery life, trigger low battery messages almost immediately, and are susceptible to corrosion and leakage that can damage the electronics. Always use AAA lithium batteries.

What happens if a battery loses power / dies?
Before a SRAM AXS battery (in the fork and rear shock) loses power, Flight Attendant’s Safe Mode automatically places the suspension system into the Open position so you can get home safe to recharge.

If the pedal sensor battery dies while the fork and rear shock SRAM AXS batteries still maintain power, the rider can use Manual Mode to change the damping state of the fork and rear shock. If the rider stays in Auto Mode, the system will stay in the Open position until the pedal sensor battery is replaced.

Will cold temperatures affect the battery life of Flight Attendant parts?
RockShox products and SRAM AXS batteries have optimal performance in temperatures ranging from 0° C (32° F) to 38° C (100° F). Product performance will degrade in temperatures outside this range. We don’t recommend use in temperatures below -12° C (10° F) and above 49° C (120° F).

Should I always remove the batteries and replace with covers when transporting
my bike?
For extended transportation, we recommend that you remove the SRAM AXS batteries and replace them with the red battery blocks to keep the battery contacts clean. This will also remind you to install your batteries before you ride.

What happens if I lose or forget a SRAM AXS battery? Can I use one battery to move each component into open?
If a SRAM AXS battery is forgotten, whichever component is powered up will switch to Safe Mode. You can then install that same battery into the other component to switch that component to Safe Mode, if it’s not there already.

Can I replace the battery latch on my Flight Attendant Control Module? Battery latches are not replaceable.

Are batteries included?
The SRAM AXS batteries are included separately and must be fully charged before installation and use. The AXS Controller and Pedal Sensor batteries are pre-installed, however, the Pedal Sensor must be activated prior to pairing or use.

How do I know the battery life of my components?
The AXS component LED indicators, located near the AXS logo, illuminate when the component AXS button is pressed. The color of the LED indicates the battery charge
level. You can also use the SRAM AXS mobile app to monitor battery life for all your AXS components. Check out the Flight Attendant User Manual for more information on battery life.

Are Flight Attendant batteries cross-compatible with Reverb AXS seatposts and Eagle AXS derailleurs?
Yes, SRAM AXS batteries are compatible with any AXS derailleur, seatpost, or Flight Attendant forks and rear shocks.

SET UP AND SERVICE

How do I pair Flight Attendant?
AXS systems are motion activated. Before connecting to your system, shake or move the bicycle to wake the system components.

Before the Flight Attendant system can be paired, the new pedal sensor must be activated. Pedal sensor activation only needs to occur once prior to initial pairing, never again. Press and hold the AXS button on the sensor, located inside the spindle of the cranks, for 5 seconds until the LED illuminates solid, then release. The pedal sensor is now ready to be paired.

Begin the pairing session with the Flight Attendant Control Module on the fork. Press and hold the AXS button on the module until the AXS LED blinks slowly, then release. Press and hold the AXS button on the next device to be paired in until the AXS LED illuminates green and then flashes quickly. The Flight Attendant Control Module’s AXS LED will also flash quickly indicating that the device was paired successfully.

Continue this process for all other AXS components, then press and release the AXS button on the Flight Attendant Control Module to end the pairing session, or wait 30 seconds for the session to timeout. The AXS LED will stop blinking.

Successful pairing can be verified within the AXS app. All AXS components should be paired into a single system, ensuring optimized functionality and customization within the AXS app. All paired components will be listed below the Flight Attendant fork.

If using in combination with AXS drivetrain or seat post, the pairing session must start with the Flight Attendant control module. After initiating pairing session with one of these the rest of the components may be paired in any order.

If my Control Module or Rear Shock Module breaks, can it be replaced?
Yes. Please bring your SRAM product and original receipt to a local shop. The shop will work with SRAM Technical Support to initiate the warranty claim.

How should I clean Flight Attendant after a ride?
We recommend that you wipe down your FA components after every ride and inspect for debris or damage. Doing so will help keep your seals and stanchions clean and extend premium fork performance. Make sure to clean the components with soap and water only. Rinse thoroughly with water and allow the parts to dry.

NOTE: Remove the SRAM batteries and install the red battery blocks into the Flight Attendant Control Module and Rear Shock Module before cleaning. Do not clean the components with a power washer. Do not use acidic or grease-dissolving agents. Do not soak or store Flight Attendant components or the AXS Controller in any cleaning product or liquid. Chemical cleaners and solvents can damage plastic components.

Do I need to do anything different when washing my bike with Flight Attendant components?
While Flight Attendant components can withstand pressure washing and submersion, each component should be treated the same way you would treat ball bearing-equipped components such as a hub, headset, or bottom bracket. That is, avoid blasting water directly at the seals on the modules or at junction points between component assemblies.

Make sure to remove the SRAM AXS batteries and install the red battery blocks into the fork Control Module and Rear Shock Module before cleaning.
