Press Release

[Waterloo, WI] – A year ago, Trek took a flyer on Stache, a unique 29+ trail hardtail with oversized 29×3.0˝ tires and a remarkably nimble frame that would allow hardtail diehards to experience the thrill of the most technical terrain. Stache won over riders around the world for its confidence-inspiring handling, capability, and sheer fun. And now, we’ve packed all the best parts of the previous platform into an expanded lineup with lightweight carbon options and key spec upgrades, setting a new benchmark in the trail hardtail category.

The newly expanded Stache lineup includes two OCLV Mountain Carbon models (Stache 9.8 and 9.6), along with two Alpha Platinum Aluminum models (Stache 7 and 5). Stache will also be available as a carbon frameset.

The new OCLV Mountain Carbon frame of Stache 9.8 and 9.6 weighs about 400 grams less than its alloy counterpart, and also benefits from a more aggressive geometry with a 15mm longer reach and a bottom bracket that’s 5mm lower.

Stache 9.8 is equipped with the all-new Rock Shox 29+ Pike fork, Bontrager Line Pro 35mm cockpit, and Bontrager Drop Line dropper post. Bontrager’s Line Pro 40 OCLV Carbon wheels complete the lightweight carbon package. The ultra-capable Stache 9.8 tips the scales at 27.2 lbs.

All carbon and alloy models feature additional travel, with an increase in suspension from 110mm to 120mm.

All-new Stache models will be available at Trek retailers and on trekbikes.com this September.

Frequently asked Questions

What’s new with Stache?

Stache is now available with an OCLV Mountain Carbon frame that saves about 400 grams compared to the carry-forward alloy Stache frame. The new carbon frame is featured on the Stache 9.6 and the Stache 9.8, both of which also get new RockShox 120mm forks. Stache 9.8 gets some big upgrades from Bontrager with Line Pro 40 OCLV Carbon wheels, the new Line Pro 35mm cockpit, and the new Drop Line dropper post.

While the alloy frame remains unchanged, both alloy models, the Stache 5 and the Stache 7 get new Manitou forks with 120mm travel for a bump in capability over last year’s models.

Besides the frame material, are there any other differences between alloy Stache and carbon Stache?

Yes. New carbon Stache follows modern trail bike geometry evolution. That means it gets a slightly lower BB for added stability, and a significantly longer top tube, which allows riders to run shorter stems for better control. New carbon Stache gets Carbon Armor both under the Midstay and under the down tube for added protection over rough terrain.

What sizes are available?

Carbon Stache is available in 15.5, 17.5, 19.5, and 21.5. Alloy Stache models are available in 15.5, 17.5, 18.5, 19.5, and 21.5.

What is the max tire size for Stache?

29 x 3.0”

Is carbon Stache available as a frameset? What about alloy Stache?

Only carbon Stache is available as an aftermarket frameset.

Can I run a rigid fork on the carbon Stache?

We don’t recommend it. Carbon Stache is optimized for a 120mm-travel fork. Running a rigid fork with a shorter axle-to-crown height will result in an overly steep head angle and undesirable handling.

Riders can still run rigid forks on alloy Stache frames, but should be aware that this will result in a steeper head angle and correspondingly quicker handling.

Is Stache compatible with SRAM Eagle drivetrains?

Yes.

What is the max chain ring size?

The max size is 32, but the recommended size is 30.
