Dutch brand, Scope just announced a new wheelset for XC and gravel. A well regarded brand in the road cycling world, it’s interesting to see them branching out into carbon fiber MTB wheels…
The rim is Tubeless and Hookless, thanks to a special “tire bed” that seals the nipple holes, developed in collaboration with Schwalbe to ensure excellent sealing and an easy installation. The rim dimensions are 23mm in height, 31mm external width, and 25mm internal width. The shape is asymmetrical with a 3mm offset. The rim is equipped with special reinforcement layer at the nipple seat to minimize tension stress while at the same time managing the thickness across the rim, saving 10% in weight in comparison with the same hoop built with traditional construction.
The hubs are manufactured by Scope and use 24 spokes for the front hub and 28 spokes for the rear hub, all Sapim Laser spokes, with a straight head. The rotor attachments are Centerlock. The bearings are SKF or, at a cost of € 500, ceramic bearings are available. The flanges are spaced as far apart as possible to ensure maximum stiffness and robustness: 61mm is the distance between the rear hub flanges.
A pair of wheels (we’re not sure which configuration) weighs only 1.380 grams. The price is € 1,398 and availability starts in November, while Scope’s first contact with the MTB public will be at the Eurobike show.
